Pirates of Penzance is one of my favorite operettas to use when teaching my students about opera! The songs use bel canto technique, but there is a lot of talking in it still so the kids can follow along with the plot.
This guided listening worksheet was designed to go along with the 1983 recording of it.
This pdf has both the 1-sided version of the worksheet with all of the questions on one page, as well as the 2-sided version which would have to be cut in half and photo copied double sided.
The front asks multiple choice questions about the vocal ranges, plot and whether certain songs are an aria or recitative.
The back asks questions that can be answered in 1-2 sentences about the plot to make sure that the students are keeping up with and understanding the plot rather than using movie-watching as naptime.
I grade the front for right or wrong answers, and the back I check for completion, and it can be used as a Listening Assessment, or it could be a great activity to do with a Substitute!
