This Animated Step-by-Step Poem is designed to complement the Animated English Muffin Pizza Recipe available through Bloom. The poem is excellent for allowing students to continue to work on a literacy/language agenda, while filling in the ‘downtime’ , waiting for the mini pizzas to bake. In addition, this poem provides practice counting to 5 … and lends itself well to working on ordinal numbers (first, second, third, fourth, fifth).
This poem seems to be used in many of the preschools programs that I have worked with; the author of the poem is unknown.
Here is the poem in its entirety:
(asterisks signify where animations & sound effects are inserted)
Five little children all in a row ***** (counting children with cardinal numbers appearing)
Ordered a pizza in a box to go*
The first one said, ** “Pepperoni tastes so fine.” * (confirmed with requested item)
The second one said,** “I want mushrooms on mine.” * (confirmed with requested item)
The third one said, ** “I want peppers that are hot.”* (confirmed with requested item)
The fourth one said, ** “I want cheese … a lot.” *(confirmed with requested item)
The fifth one said,** “Be sure to add some spice.”* (confirmed with requested item)
And they all had pizza that tasted mighty nice!”**
There are numerous subtle delays designed to encourage students to 'jump ahead' with spoken communication. For example when counting the number 2 will appear then the spoken label appears slightly later. Literacy is the primary focus of this activity so the comments of the five children in the poem are presented as text alone.
