This is an excellent week-long homework project (or a 2 hour in class assignment) where students create a pizza and divide it into 8, 12 or 16 slices. They then follow the directions to create different fractional parts with different toppings. Following this, they answer pizza story problems related to fractions and put the answers somewhere on their pizza box. Prep: Ask local pizza places to donate pizza boxes (if not, have kids each ask on their own). I use this project as a reminder of fraction concepts learned in 3rd grade for the beginning of my 4th grade fractions unit. Works with 3rd or 4th grade.
