Instead of using a test as a summative assessment, use this project that can be graded like a test. Students are given the basic information needed to plan a pizza party.
They need to create a system of equations, create a graph, solve using substitution and elimination, and analyze the answers. This project includes an element of choice by letting the students decide the adult/teen/child make-up list of the party. They will use their decision to then decide on a pizza order.
Other skills include: writing an equation from a word problem, using percentages, combining like terms, graphing. The project can easily be modified to include discrete vs. continuous, step functions, domain, and range.
I designed this project for a teacher that has never used a project as an assessment before. He really enjoyed using this as a first project. He said it was rigorous, but the students enjoyed the real life application. He claimed that they were all very motivated and focus. He was impressed that most of the material that he needed to test (and a lot of previous material) was covered by one project. I hope you find it just as valuable.
