Serve up some fun while practicing phonemic awareness skills! This is a fun way to introduce segmenting in a small group. Give each student a slice of cheese pizza and some “toppings”. Two-color counters are perfect to use as pepperoni. The teacher shows a picture or gives a word to be segmented. The students then sound out the word adding one topping for each sound. Once the students understand the concept, this activity can be placed in an independent work station. There are seven different pizzas with matching topping slices. Students name the picture, then tap the sounds out on the correct pizza slice and place it on top of the picture. There are also five corresponding “Pizza Toppings” worksheets. These are perfect for independent work or assessment! 26 pages of FUN with words and sounds!
