Place Value and Measurement Animal Themed Project 4th Grade
This fun, 16 student-page
, place value project is not just aligned to the common core, it was created for the common core. Students will engage in the embedded mathematical practices while covering most of the 4th grade NBT standards. This packet provides a great teaching tool, challenging practice and enrichment for 4th grade and is rigorous enough to be a challenging review for 5th and 6th grade. Students are asked to round and compare numbers in a real-world context, rather than as an isolated algorithm, showing students the usefulness and application of the skill.
Students will love the challenging questions that make them think and conceptualize the common core state standards while learning interesting information about animals. Most of the animals included in this packet are threatened or near-threatened to help students become more aware of these animals that need our help. The language used in the questions is intentionally rigorous giving students better practice in reading directions and giving them the opportunity to increase their own vocabulary.
Often times curriculum is presented in textbooks one standard at a time. This packet brings continuity and coherence of mathematical concepts by asking students to solve problems that involve multiple standards or skills; an experience that students often do not get in traditional textbooks.
The topics students will engage in are:
•recognizing a digit in one place represents ten times what it represent in the place to its right
•read and write whole numbers in standard form, word form and expanded form
•Adding and subtracting whole numbers-word problems
•Multiplying whole numbers
•converting measurement units(standard and metric) to compare animals
•Includes: feet, yards and miles, kilograms and grams, pounds and tons
•Creating and reading a line plot
•Creating a bar graph
•Some decimal addition appropriate for 4th grade
and all in a real-world context!
This packet is entirely appropriate for all three grades and can be used in many different ways!
•Review for unit test or state tests
•As early finisher work
•for an independent small group
•for whole class review and practice
Many pages can be used as performance tasks or as formative assessments. Doing these with our students allowed us many opportunities to check in with them to ensure understanding. It was a great way for students to work at their own pace, and differentiation came naturally, as we were able to do daily one-on-one and small group teaching, while the rest of the class was happily engaged in the project. This happened authentically, and we repeatedly had opportunities to teach and reteach for individual needs. There were countless "ah ha" moments...a teacher's favorite sound!
