Description

Put some “Woo Hoo!” into studying place value, by creating a super-cute PVG (Place Value Gingerbread) craft.

This is an especially fun activity for your students; and if they are like mine, they will absolutely LOVE making a gingerbread cookie.

Completed projects turn out adorable, and make an outstanding December bulletin board or hallway display.

I’ve included 2 posters to help decorate.

You’re sure to get lots of compliments, as the results definitely have that “Wow!” factor, as mixing math concepts with an artistic twist is truly interesting.

The packet is very versatile with lots of creative options for your students to choose from, which not only results in a nice variety of gingerbread cookies, but allows you to easily diversify your lessons.

The craftivity appeals to a variety of ages, grade levels, and abilities.

The versatility allows younger kiddos, as well as older students, to create a gingerbread that will have a two, three, or even four-digit number value.

Keep things simple for little ones and limit the number of pieces and options, so they create a two-digit cookie; while challenging older students to design a bigger value for their gingerbread cookie.

Be sure and check the PREVIEW for lots of samples.

Once children are done decorating their place value cookie, they figure out how much it's “worth”, which gives them a value.

I’ve provided 3 worksheet options for students to complete, as well as several whole-group activities for data collection and analysis.

Math standards that are practiced:

- A variety of place value concepts (expanded form, value, place, word form, making bundles, doing conversions)

- subtraction

- greater than, less than, equal to

- data collection & analysis.

- when figuring out the value of their gingerbread cookie, students can also practice skip counting, especially by 10s.

Limited time? This makes a super-fun homework assignment, or another idea is to have students work with a partner or create one PVG in a small group of three.

I’m Diane from Teach With Me, wishing you an awesome time practicing place value, with a gingerbread pal.
