This Number Compare Place Value Activity is featured in my SMART Notebook series of slides titled "Build, Write, Talk, Compare Large Numbers." Included in this package are three different versions of the same activity. Students can play this game individually, with a partner, or as a Merry Go Round activity. The Merry Go Round activity includes a self-assessment portion.
Students should be given multiple copies of the given activity sheet and number cards 0-9 (at least 2 sets). Students will select two cards from the pile and create two two-digit numbers. For example, if the student draws a number 1 and a number 2 card the student could create 12 or 21. Students will color in both numbers created on the hundred chart and then determine which number would be greater. Students should then be encouraged to discuss how they know which number is greater with their partner. Math Talk Time!
As a Merry Go Round activity, you would set up a small group of desks or a large table with stations. At each station place two cards. The students would create their numbers, find them on the hundred chart and determine which is the greater number. To complete the self-assessement they would simply turn over an index card to reveal the correct answer and color is the corresponding face (happy or sad). Use a simple bell to rotate students to a new station seat on the Merry Go Round and they will try the next challenge!
