This Place Value Assessment Pack is designed to help teachers, students and parents know if students are really ‘getting it’ as they work towards mastery of Common Core Math standards. Students who set and monitor goals make faster progress and improve their interest in their tasks1. This Assessment Pack provides goal sheets, formatives, answer keys and test analysis pages that will help teachers and students monitor their progress towards mastery. For math instruction, I use the My Math Curriculum as a resource and this pack follows along with Chapter 1, but could go with any Unit on Place Value.
The Goal Sheet shows the students what the end Goals are before they start the unit. This way they are able to monitor their progress. Students will determine if they understand a skill after each lesson. They can then take responsibility to join reteaching groups and ask questions if they do not understand the skill after a few lessons. They update their goal sheets after formatives and again after your own Summative Assessments.
This pack contains four formatives, one for each major skill covered in the Common Core Place Value standards. Each formative takes about 5 minutes and can be given at the end of a lesson or the next day. They are quick to take and to grade and can fit in easily even with limited math time. The score guide informs both students and parents of their progress towards mastery.
The Test Analysis page comes in two versions. One is for the teacher to fill out to communicate students’ progress towards mastery to parents and students. The second version is for students to fill out. This version is given to students with their graded unit summative. Students analyze incorrect answers to decide if they made a simple mistake or if they didn’t know how to correctly solve the problem. This allows them to not only monitor their own mastery levels, but also to analyze the mistakes they make throughout an assessment.
