This resource can be used during whole group lessons, within small groups, in centers, or during write the room or scoot activities. This set of cards is geared towards second grade to be used as an extension for students to focus on building numbers many different ways but can also be used in third grade.
This packet includes a set of 20 building cards each with a given number and specific direction on how to build it and a place to write in how many hundreds, tens and ones are in each number. Plus, there is an additional set of 4 blank cards for you to make as many more as you might need. Also included is a building mat and a recording sheet for when the cards are used in centers or write the room activities. The complete packet comes in both color and black and white.
I use this packet within my own classroom during whole group activities and centers as well as a quick assessment that truly challenges my students to think differently about numbers. It provides students with a fun way to practice building different numbers in many different ways, manipulating base ten blocks based on a given direction, and understanding the direct connection between the base ten blocks and the hundreds place, tens place or ones place. Probably the most beneficial part of this packet is the extensive directions and bonus questions for extending your students' learning. Use the three pages of challenge questions to allow your students to gain a deeper understanding of place value.
