As my students were struggling with place value, I created this simple Place Value Chart to help them recall the different values. I then provided students with 10 popsicle sticks. They wrote the numbers 0-9 (1 number on each stick). As a quick activity to familiarize them with place value, they mixed up their sticks and place one stick in each column on the chart. Next, they practiced reading that number aloud.
Each student had their own cheap and easy chart with sticks, which was stored in a plastic bag inside his/her desk. Throughout the school year, I caught students taking out their charts and sticks to place difficult numbers that they found in their work onto their charts. The students really enjoyed the visual.
