What to take the mystery out of the place value of BOTH whole AND decimal numbers while still having some fun? Here are three hands-on math activities with printable manipulatives / game pieces for you to use in whole group, small group, or workstations.
Activity 1 - Switching Places - students use number cards to arrange the numbers in order from largest to smallest and vice versa. The colorful number cards are numbered from the thousands to the hundred thousands. Decimal cards cover tenths, hundredths and thousandths.
Activity 2 - Students will use spinners to create numbers of any size from thousands to hundred thousands (or up to hundredths for decimals) to create numbers and record them on a data sheet. They compare their numbers against a partner. The partner with the highest number of largest numbers wins. (or smallest numbers - your choice). Both colorful and black & white spinners are included.
Activity 3 - Students draw two small number cards (choosing whole number, decimal numbers, or both) and place them in the appropriate place on the graphic organizer to show greater than, less than, or equal to. Students can also pull four cards and arrange them in order from least to greatest or greatest to least, recording the results on the appropriate record sheet. This activity works well as small group or partner work.
Finally, 4 practice pages are included for students needing more reinforcement.
