This activity was designed to allow students to explore place value to the hundred thousands. Students begin by creating as many different numbers as they can using the same 6 digits. Provided is a chart that you can cut up to provide every student the digits to manipulate to help them create different numbers. The next page is a chance for students to think more critically about place value by solving a riddle about a world record competition.
To provide a hook or extension for this lesson, share interesting world records with your students or allow them to research some on their own. You can also use this activity as a tiered lesson where your students who need more practice work on the exploration activity and the students who have a good grasp on place value try the world record. An answer key is provided for the riddle on the title page of the activity. I hope you enjoy!
