Students often need extra practice with the important skill of adding and subtracting 2, 3, and/or 4 digit numbers with and without regrouping. Look no further than this activity for a fun, hands-on activity that can be easily differentiated to meet the diverse needs of all of your students.
NOTE: Teachers will need a set of place value dice to accompany this activity (available online through Creative Mathematics, Amazon.com, and your local teacher supply stores) to allow for the customization that meet the ability levels of all your students. Students who are ready for 2-digit numbers will roll 2 dice (a tens and ones dice) to make a two-digit number. Students who are ready for 3-digit numbers will roll 3 dice (a hundreds, tens, and ones dice) to make a three-digit number. Students who are ready for 4-digit numbers will roll 4 dice (a thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones dice) to make a four-digit number.
Students roll the number of dice instructed by their teacher to create and solve their own addition and subtraction number sentences. Students will need to look closely at the numbers they rolled and decide if they need to regroup or not. Finally, students show and record their work on the student pages in the proper positions with the aid of place value frames to guide them.
