Product Description

Use these place value games to have students practice place value. Specifically designed to support the Common Core second grade standards for place value. Students will practice place value by playing games that represent numbers in different ways such as base 10 blocks, base 10 units, expanded form and word form.

WHY TEACH PLACE VALUE?

Place value is our system of expressing quantities in an efficient manner.  Our place value system uses base 10.  Each shift to the left increase values by ten times. Each shift to the right decreases values by one-tenth. We write the numbers using what is termed as standard form. Understanding place value is key to adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing.

HOW IT WORKS

These are games intended to be used AFTER students have had instruction in place value. The games are designed for independent practice.

There are 4 games included to practice place value.

State the Value of the Digits (2 digit and 3 digit versions) 2 - 4 players

In this game, students play on game board. Landing on a space, the student states the value of the digits of the number in the space such as, 32 is 30 and 2 or 3 tens and 2 ones.

Answer my Riddle! (2 digit and 3 digit versions) 2 - 4 players

In this game, students move around on a game board. In order to advance the students must correctly answer a question on a card (DOK 2). All the questions relate to place value.

Four in a Row! (2 digit and 3 digit versions) 2 players

In this game, students try to get 4 connected spaces in a row by stating the value of the digits or by stating the number that is represented in another form. There are 6 game boards for variation and number of digits.

Greater or Lesser Challenge (2 digit and 3 digit versions) 2 - 4 players

In this game, students divide a pile of cards. Students decide if the winning hand will be the greater or lesser number. Each student places a card down and then they determine the winner (greater or lesser). Play continues until all cards are played.

Each game comes with instructions for the student and answer keys. The games are also included in NON-COLOR versions.
