The package starts with an inquiry style question that challenges students to use their background knowledge and creative thinking to help introduce the new learning. This is followed by a challenging multipage worksheet. The questions build from remedial practice into complex word problems. Most of my worksheets have an underlying theme of algebra throughout. I also try to incorporate learning from other units so that students develop an understanding of math competency as whole and not specialized units. Most worksheets also contain a KRUSHER at the end for students who enjoy a good challenge!
Each of my lessons was created as part of a challenging grade 7 workbook I have been constructing for years. It is a fusion of traditional worksheets, with contemporary initiatives like inquiry and group-work style learning. It can be used as a supplement to traditional textbooks, though I use it almost exclusively throughout the year. It is meant to be challenging but achievable. While it is broken down into standard units and lessons, there is a theme of algebra running through the entire book. I try my best not to teach math concepts in isolation. Most of my worksheets include questions that also use learning from previous units. I have found that revisiting ideas consistently throughout the year help reinforce student learning and eliminates the ‘forgetting’ of concepts by June. Especially helpful for grades with standardized tests at the end of the year!
