In order to fully understand place value, students use Base 10 Blocks to create a number as many ways as possible. In doing so, they will be able to make connections between ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands. For example, students should understand that the number 123 can be created using one hundreds flat, two tens rods, and 3 ones bits. The number could also be created using twelve tens rods and 3 ones bits. Students must understand the relationships between the places in order to fully understand the value of a number.
This activity works well in small groups, or as a station/center in a math rotation.
