The Place Value Investigations pack contains three activities to help students review place value. To add interest, the activities are embedded in a narrative. Detective Black from the Numberton Police Department is called in to investigate a robbery at a jewelry store. The story of the crime and how the detective tracks down the suspect, Math Trickster, is presented in three chapters that cover the scene of the crime, the chase, and the conclusion of the search for the suspect. A chapter is read and discussed by the students, who then work on solving a place value puzzle related to the story. While each narrative is intended to “set the stage” for an associated puzzle, the text may also be used as a comprehension exercise prior to the math work. The puzzles, which students solve to help Detective Black in his investigations, require some knowledge of place value. The students will use their knowledge to break a security code, identify a likely suspect in a line up, and figure out the location of the real criminal. There are differentiated activities within each activity, so students with varying math skills and knowledge may tackle each problem.
