Students will create a 10 digit number (or fewer digits to meet the needs of your students) and identify place values ranging from thousandths to billions while moving around the classroom. Additional mini-activities include ordering, comparing, and putting numbers in written and expanded form. PDF includes 3 pages of directions, 4 different student number building sheets (shifting the decimal place), 13 place value signs from thousandths to billions, and two student worksheets of varied ability. See preview for a closer look.
I use this the first week of school every year to assess both academic and social skills. It's a quick way to gauge which students have place value mastered and which need more practice. Since it's an activity in which students are moving around the room and engaging in conversation at times I can see which students are leaders, outgoing, helpful to others, or shy.
Before printing, ensure the PDF is scaled to your liking in the print preview.
