Meaningful Activities to Build the School-Home Relationship!

With the emphasis on mathematical understanding instead of rote steps, it is very important to educate parents about what the standards mean. Since many parents possibly learned different methods or styles as a child, they may be confused.

This low prep pack was created for the busy teacher to help improve home-school communication. This packet covers several of the vocabulary terms in place value and gives parents the opportunity to practice each term and concept with their child.

This pack includes
• 5 parent letters
• 10 activities

The teacher simply copies the parent letter on the front and the correlating activity on the back of the page! Each parent letter has two different activities: an activity to the tens place and an activity to the hundreds place for differentiation or scaffolding. The teacher can choose which level to copy on the back of the parent letter.

The only materials families will need to complete most activities is a pair of scissors! Families will cut off the number cards on the bottom. Then, families complete the open-ended activity (matching the parent letter) on the back of the page!

The five parent letters cover the following concepts:

• Written Form- This letter defines and explains the terms written form and standard form.
• Value of a Digit-This letter defines and explains the term value of a digit using the place value chart.
• Expanded Form-This letter defines and explains the terms value of a digit and expanded form.
• Base Ten Blocks-This letter defines and explains the terms base ten and base ten blocks.
• Comparing Numbers-This letter defines and explains the term comparing and provides examples of the symbols <,>, and =.

The ten open-ended activities cover the following concepts:

• Written Form (two-digit number)
• Written Form (three-digit number)
• Value of a Digit (two-digit number)
• Value of a Digit (three digit number)
• Expanded Form (two-digit number)
• Expanded Form (three-digit number)
• Regrouping Blocks to the Tens Place
• Regrouping Blocks to the Hundreds Place
• Comparing Two Digit Numbers
• Comparing Three Digit Numbers

These parent letters and activities would be perfect for homework! I hope they make teaching just a bit easier!

The following standards are addressed in this pack:
• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1- Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. Understand the following as special cases:
• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1.A- 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens — called a "hundred."
• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.1.B- The numbers 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine hundreds (and 0 tens and 0 ones).
• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.3- Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, number names, and expanded form.
• CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT.A.4- Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
