After we get the basics of place value out of the way, I like to have my students practice and apply what they know about place value in fun ways.
With this activity, students will create a picture using base 10 blocks, and then write about what they created, how many blocks they used total (standard form), how many of each type of block they used (hundreds, tens, and ones), expanded form, and word form.
This project took my students an normal math block (about 45-60 minutes) to complete, and they loved it!
Differentiate the activity by only using tens and ones, or by using hundreds, tens, and ones.
