Piggy Place Value Centers will be a fun and engaging way for your students to build their understanding of place value.
Center #1 will provide students the initial opportunity of pairing the numeral card with the place value representation card. Students will demonstrate their understanding of tens and ones by making pairs that are equivalent.
Center #2 will provide students with an extended opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of place value. Students will recognize which number, which picture, which word form, and which expanded form cards match. Students will need to find the 4 cards that match and justify their thinking by citing evidence on the cards.
Center #3 will enable students to apply their understanding of place value. Students will be comparing and contrasting the number and the picture representation on each card. Students will need to verify if the two are equivalent. If they are the student will put the card in the 'True' category. If the two are not equivalent, then the student will sort the card into the 'False' category.
Center #4 provides the opportunity for students to compose, decompose, and compare/contrast place value. Students will need to prove that 3 cards fit together because they create the same amount. Students can justify their reasoning and support their claim by citing the evidence provided on the 3 matching cards.
I hope you enjoy using Piggy Place Value Centers with your students.
