This set of task cards combined with a differentiated game are a perfect way to move your students to a deeper, more thorough understanding of large numbers by helping them "manipulate" the digits in the different places.
The first activity is a set of 24 task cards (complete with answer key!) which ask students to change numbers by altering digits in the different places. The first cards start with 3 digit numbers and gradually get larger and larger. The last 8 cards involve more complex changes—where the digit has to “cross” the 0. For example, for the number 513, taking away 3 “tens” would require breaking apart the hundreds to get more tens. The first 16 cards require no complex trading across places. These are great to really check place value understanding, precision, and direction following!
I have made these task cards in both color and black and white for ultimate flexibility. The cards get progressively more difficult as they go. Consider using them to differentiate centers, as whole class warm ups, or use the first 4-8 cards with an intervention group.
The second activity is the game “Presto Change-o” which is another way for students to work on altering numbers by “playing with” and increasing and decreasing digits in the different places. Draw a card and write it down. Spin both spinners and use the results to change the number on the card to the new number created when adding or subtracting For each round, the player with the larger changed number wins the round. The winner is the player who wins the most rounds.
I have included three versions of the game…for 4 digit numbers, and two variations for 6 digit numbers.
