This Math and Science unit is set up as to be a whole class Math / Science STEM activity, or an independent math center – depending on the ability of your students.
There is a purchase that is necessary for the completion of the activity. This purchase is colored popcorn kernels. These can be made very easily by separating the kernels into bowls, covering them in white vinegar, adding food coloring and then letting them soak (usually 20-30 minutes does the trick). Exactly the same as you would dye Easter eggs. You can also purchase pre-colored kernels.
The over arcing target for this lesson is grouping and counting objects by tens and ones. Although this would be the “meat” of this lesson, several other standards and skills are addressed.
Math skills addressed: Whole number computation, graphing, estimating, place value, beginning regrouping and renaming. Extension conversations can easily lead into fraction content.
Science skills addressed: Observing and classifying, estimating, gathering and recording data, interpreting data
