Used as part of an interactive activity to assess understanding of place value.
I did this activity with my 1st graders and they loved it. First I filled 20 brown paper bags. I filled the bags with random objects that can be counted, but mostly I filled the bags with math manipulative, however any small object works. Each bag is labeled with a number 1-20. Students rotate from desk to desk, the bags do not move. Students count objects in the bag by grouping by 10. For example one bag may have 22 bears. Students make 2 groups of 10 and have 2 bears left over. Students then write how many groups of 10 and how many ones. I works great for assessing if your students understand place value and grouping.
