This resource includes a visual strategy for learning place value. Each part of the train is labeled with the ones, tens, hundreds, or thousands. The front of the train, beginning with the conductor, is labeled with the ones, so students know to always begin with the ones place for computation, determining if a number is even or odd, etc. Students should be taught that the train can continue to add more cars as more zeros are added to a number (ie. ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions, etc.) Students are then asked to practice labeling the value of underlined digits in numbers up to the thousands place. They are also asked to identify numbers in the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones place.
