Product Description
This is a MUST HAVE for your grade one or two classroom. The concept of place value is difficult to teach, and this unit, meant to be used over the period of about 2-4 weeks is essential. What I have done is take the activities presented in the book cited and created a SmartBoard "Go-Along." It is highly recommended that you seek out this book to read more in-depth about the lessons and activites presented. However, if you do not have access to the book, the presentation is fine as a stand alone. I have 6 Word Documents that go with the unit, and will email these to you -- free of charge-- if you should request. (The Word Documents are a homework activity, and recording sheets that go with the slides. In the book, the students typically use blank paper, so the documents aren't necessary, but I find that I prefer a more organized look to their work.)

This begins with a look at the 0-99 chart, examining patterns, and provides activities to reinforce that learning. Double-Digit addition is touched upon in some of the lessons, though the students are asked to come up with their own addition strategies rather than presenting the standard algorithm. There is a Math and Literature lesson included as well, to go with the book "The King's Commissioner's" by Aileen Friedman. I have included a slide for each of the "Math Menu" activities suggested by Marilyn Burns to reinforce place value learning complete with instructions:
*Race for 1.00
*Dollar Signs
*Cover a Flat
*0-99 Patterns
*Number Puzzles
*Fill the Cube
*Five Tower Game
*Guess My Number
