After you’ve taught place value, these activities are perfect for keeping the concept fresh all year long! These activities are also great for nudging along those students who don’t quite get it yet. Use one or two of these warm-ups every day as you start your math class. Once they get the hang of these, they’ll beg to do more!
Each student will need the included place value mat and number tiles. The teacher reads the starting number and students build it on their mats. Then the teacher will call out a series of steps the students must follow, such as adding 3 hundreds to the number on the mat, rounding the number to the nearest ten, switching the digits in the thousands and ones places, doubling the hundreds digit, and more. Mental math of basic addition and subtraction facts is embedded in the process. If students successfully follow each step, they’ll have the correct answer!
Students can record their answers on one of the provided answer sheets or just jot it down in their math journals.
There are 94 problems in this activity pack: 32 place value tasks, 32 place value tasks with rounding, and 32 place value tasks with rounding and regrouping. Please download the free preview for a closer look at these activities from Time 4 Teaching.
