Place Value - Which One Doesn't Belong and Why? is an engaging compare and contrast learning task. Students love to analyze each card to determine which items are allowed to stay because they are similar and which one has to go since it is different. This activity is a great gifted strategy that all students benefit from using. Every student loves being a math detective and finding the clues about item on the slide.
Teachers can model how to do this task in a mini-lesson on place value. The slides can be projected on a board/screen or printed and held by the teacher. This task words well during a whole group lesson or in small guided groups.
The slides can be printed and laminated and used over and over again in a math center. The slides can also be printed 2 on a page and be used as smaller cards at a center.
