Here is a fun and engaging activity that will have them using multiple skills in a hands-on engaging way! Students will use a variety of shapes that have a particular value to them to create and decorate their pumpkin. The goal is try to get as a close to million as possible without going over. Students will also explain to the class about their pumpkin design and write out checks. This activity can be used in groups, with partners, or individually. It could also be use at math centers or a classroom assessment project.
Common Core State Standards:
Read and write multi-digit whole numbers using base ten names, and expanded form. Come two multi-digit numbers based on meaning of the digits in each place using >, =, < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others' ideas and expressing their own clearly.
