Shoe’s Learning Center presents a math unit consisting of 12 sequenced, activity-based lessons, and 10 ready-to-go chart and puzzle masters to develop familiarity with numbers from 1 to 130. Each student builds Tens and Hundreds from craft sticks and split peas. Learners use the place value charts which are tailored to the student constructed materials. Students take home their self-made materials at the end of the unit for continued review and practice. Directions are included for an easy-to-make instructional puppet. Number concepts of greater than, less than, equal to, place value, regular and skip counting, writing numerals, and number patterns are developed. This kinesthetic approach is suitable for both classroom and homeschool use. The unit has been refined and used with great success for several years. It has been updated to meet the Math Common Core State Standards for Grade 1.
