### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

As a teacher, I know the many responsibilities you have and it can be very challenging to find the time needed for planning engaging and effective lessons. I hope this product saves you some much-needed time in your classroom.

I have been teaching grades 4-6 for the past 13 years. I love being able to have a large collection of activities and strategies available in my classroom so I can keep my students engaged and meet their varying needs. My activities are aligned with the Common Core and can easily be adapted to suit the needs of different grade levels and abilities.

SUGGESTIONS FOR HOW TO USE THIS PRODUCT:

This is a great activity to use to introduce or review the topic of place value. Students are engaged while learning the basic foundation skills needed for understanding more complex concepts. Great mathematical conversations also take place, allowing students to share what they know and make observations.

When using this activity in class, I get the students hooked by informing them they will get to use M&M’s in class. I walk the students through the activity step-by-step, using the included SMART Notebook slideshow, building on what they already know and reviewing/reinforcing skills we’ve already studied. After students predict the number of M&M’s they think are in their bag, I invite students to share their responses. We talk about the “reasonableness” of our answers and make observations about the predictions students made. I walk students through an example of each question they will answer on their page and use the SMART Notebook slideshow so students have a visual of each concept. Students are encouraged to share and talk with other students as they complete the activity.

If you wanted to extend the activity, students could make graphs of the M&M’s in their bags.
