Placemats for Art Supplies
When I took an advanced mosaic workshop this summer that involved many complicated tools and materials, I had an “AHA” moment! What if my teacher had provided a place mat with images and labels of the tools and materials? It would have been much easier for me as a student to organize myself and learn the names of the tools.
Inspired, I created these mats for my students. They have changed my classroom, making students independent, self directed and confident. My setup for each class is so easy now, no matter how many materials are involved. To prepare up for a class, I keep the needed materials on the counter and I simply place the mats at each seat, like a table setting. On arrival, the student helps him or herself to the materials they need. I now never hear the complaint, “I didn’t get the pencil”. Students remember the names of the materials, and the imagery makes it so easy for visual learners.
Eight mats are included for the following art lessons:
Perspective Drawing (can be used for Pencil Drawing)
Linoleum Printing (can be used for Gelli Printing also)
My intention originally was to laminate them, which would make them sturdy. I never did laminate them, and they still work beautifully. If a mat gets very dirty, I simply print out another one.
I have so much more energy at the end of the day; because students do the setup and cleanup work them selves without my help. I wish I had thought of this idea twenty years ago when I started out. I hope you find it as helpful as I do.
