This Places and Communities Language Unit is a great source for language development for ELL ESL, K-3 mainstream classrooms and Special Education students. This unit includes communities: urban, suburban, and rural and all the places you can find in these communities. Posters include direction, and communities. Flashcards introduce the basic concept of maps, direction and types of communities!
There are many ways to use this unit in your lesson plans and classroom. Modifications and differentiation can be executed to make this unit work best in your classroom.
-vocab cards/word wall cards for speaking, listening, writing activities
-communities posters for visual aids
-write around the room cards and worksheet
-ABC order worksheets
-writing pages: compare/contrast, describing activities, KWL charts
-places and communities language unit assessment
How I use this unit in my classroom:
I keep the word wall cards on my pocket chart so students can use them if needed. Students use the cards for free write, write around the room during Daily 5, sorting activities, memory game and oral language activities. We practice the flashcards daily.
I assess vocabulary at the beginning of the unit and then again at the end.
The other worksheets are done throughout the weeks.
Typically I do one worksheet as guided practice and the other for independent work during center time.
There are many ways to differentiate and modify these activities. As always, do what is best for your class!
