I provide students with a mini-lesson on plagiarism and academic dishonesty at the beginning of each school year. At the conclusion of the lesson, I have students review the attached contract with their parents and return it signed. This ensures that both, parents and students understand how plagiarism and academic dishonesty are defined, best practices for avoiding them, and what the consequences are when students engage in these behaviors.
I have found that often times students do not know they are engaging in academically dishonest behaviors or do not realize the behaviors have consequences outside of their secondary education setting (i.e. in the workforce).
