Students will plan a vacation given a set budget. This project includes so many aspects of rational number literacy, financial literacy and more! This project is designed to take 10 days but can be fit to your needs.
This is a 35 page Word file with 5 exploration activities and 1 Cumulative project. Answer Keys included when possible (students will make a lot of choices)! Word file provided so you can make edits to best fit your classroom.
Exploration Activities: These may be included in your project, used separately, or excluded entirely.
Conversions with Gas Prices give students an opportunity to practice conversions between systems of measurement. Multi-step conversions and rational number literacy is highly emphasized.
How Do You Roll Activity utilizes rate of change and graphing practice. Students calculate, compare, and graph the miles per gallon for four different vehicles.
Create a Bumper Sticker Activity provides the students practice with attributes of similarity and scale factor. Students are given problem situations as well as a hands on practice of enlarging an image.
Food Cost Calculations allows students to practice rational number literacy while investigating the real world application of mathematics.
Slope Intercept Form Activity gives students practice with writing and graphing equations in slope-intercept form.
The Cumulative Project:
This project is multi-faceted, but you can modify activities or length.
Students will choose or be assigned a destination city and be given a budget of $2500 to plan.
Using this the students will be expected to:
Research and calculate price for flight, hotel, rental car, gas and activities. They must compare cost and use provided sales to determine the best deal.
They will then compare prices of driving to their destination versus flying on the comparing trips form.
