Get your students excited about applying their decimal operation skills with this "Plan a Thanksgiving" project! This product walks them through the steps of creating a guest list and listing prices and ingredients needed for their main dish, sides, and desserts. Along the way they will need to add up the prices and keep track of their budget. The project also includes two extension questions where they will need to think deeper to find the total price for the entire dinner and calculate how much each guest will need to pay. Afterwards they will reflect on their learning with several reflection questions about the topic.
The students will need to be provided with a source to find the prices of the ingredients for the big dinner! Have devices with internet access? In the "Suggestions for the Teacher" page I give three links for ads that students can use from three popular grocery stores (from last year's Thanksgiving ads). However, students also love looking through the paper advertisements that can be found at your local grocery stores. It makes it feel like the real thing!
This product includes:
**Suggestions for the Teacher page that provides three links to online grocery store advertisements
**A 4-page Thanksgiving Feast Project that will use adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals skills to go through each step of the planning
**Reflection Questions page for students to complete post-project to reflect on their learning and explain their thinking in writing
I know your students will LOVE this project as much as mine have in the past. I've also learned that by bringing advertisements from grocery stores of other cultures, students of that culture will appreciate being able to "make" what they eat during their traditional Thanksgiving dinners. Students that do not celebrate Thanksgiving also enjoy this project because they are able to pick their own foods and plan a fun dinner!
