"Your Own Healthy Meal Project" is suitable for a Health or Life Skills class. With this project, students will plan and prepare a healthy and delicious meal, Students will access and evaluate the nutritional value of different recipes, in order to make a healthy choice. Students will make substitutions, if necessary, to improve the nutritional value of their meal, or to make it more to their taste.
Included with this project is a Parent Information Sheet. Since the preparing of the meal is typically done at home, I usually send this information home to parents a few weeks or even a month in advance, so that families can plan ahead.
Once students have decided on a recipe, they will use the Shopping Trip Worksheet, in order to plan what they need to purchase, and the Nutritional Info Worksheet, so that they may evaluate and record nutritional information about their meal.
At home, students will prepare their food and take pictures of the process.
The final part of this assignment is the written reflection. Typically I give students the prompt and have them complete this part in class, after they have prepared and consumed their meal.
