This is a great project to get students using their creative and higher order thinking skills, while incorporating a variety of objectives in the ecology unit. Students work in groups to design an ecosystem on an alien planet, including naming each species, exemplifying a biotic relationships in an ecosystem, and describing the unique abiotic conditions of their imagined alien world. Using this information, students will illustrate a food web for their ecosystem, then interpret and predict the effects of changes that might occur in their ecosystem on the populations of each individual species. This activity puts the work for learning back onto the students, and the teacher serves the role of facilitator. They say the one doing the work is the one doing the learning! Students will love it and have an opportunity to express their creativity, artistic talent or even sense of humor while learning about the objectives.
