In this performance task, students engage in analyzing and interpreting planetary data sets. They are given specific data sets to isolate from a large data table that show a correlation which reveals something about the physical laws of our universe. Students are tasked to identify trends and correlations, make a claim based on the data, identify outliers, and rate the strength of their claim. This is a rigorous activity that helps students truly gain a deep understanding of the physical laws of space. It is even more powerful to have students use Microsoft Excel or Word to create graphs of the correlated data sets and draw conclusions from those. This resource includes a full version of the preview, which is an introduction page. It includes a 2 page graphic organizer that provides the students with a clearly organized method of recording their responses and rating their claims. I have also included three different data tables that can be used and some sample line graphs comparing the data. This performance task was created to incorporate the engineering practices and integrate the NGSS into the science curriculum. I am using this task with my 8th graders as part of my student growth data for my evaluation. I also have a rubric for sale that is used to assess students on their ability to analyze and interpret data. I am proud of this activity. You won't be disappointed.
