This logic puzzle has the theme of planets in our solar system - if a student knows the basics of our solar system - order from the sun, which planets are gas giants, which are terrestrial, they'll be able to use the clues to solve this critical thinking puzzle easily. Even if a student doesn't know these facts, this would be a great "web-quest" type puzzle as all of the clues can be easily searched for.
The story of the puzzle is that six students have created posters of their planets, each on a different color poster board. Students will use clues about the planets and the color of poster board to solve the puzzle. Logic Puzzles are great as sub plans, enrichment, and transition activities. This puzzle would be fabulous during a science unit on astronomy as well.
With support, 4th graders could complete this puzzle. The nature of logical thinking means that a 7th grader could still find the challenge of this puzzle enjoyable. A 7th grader will finish it sooner, of course. :)
