Planning a Party has been developed as a novel, purposeful, fun and functional math investigation with an optional assessment focus. It covers a broad range of concepts, (Concept Overview) giving teachers an insight into student’s practical application of mathematical concepts. The opportunity for students to demonstrate understanding at different levels is reflected in the Assessment Rubric.
The Support Materials include Australian Curriculum Links, an Annotation Guide for Supervisors, modified pages - both scaffolded and extension, and answer pages. A free editable Assessment Rubric to support this resource is available from our store.
This investigation challenges students to use learnt facts and strategies for unfamiliar calculations and to communicate their thinking. It contains a sequence of activities with one page directly linking to following pages. As students are required to make calculations and then use their answers in following activities, the book is not designed for pages to be used in isolation or for only some pages to be used. It also requires ongoing supervision at ‘Checkpoints’ that are clearly indicated.
