Plant Adaptations #1:
"Great resource! Students of all ability levels were able to use it."
"These passages are an awesome way to teach plant adaptations while incorporating reading skills. I love how you can organize the information in a graphic organizer for a possible extended writing activity."
"Great idea! Used this as a jigsaw activity!"
This resource contains six informational reading passages
about plant adaptations. It was made for the NGSS 3-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics. It covers the following plants in the following ecosystems:
Desert Mule's Ear - desert
Mangrove Tree - ocean
Arctic Moss - arctic tundra
Cattails - wetlands
Ferns - temperate forest
Kapok Tree - Rainforest
The passages were written with third graders in mind, but the information is very interesting and would be useful for upper grades as well. Even I learned things while researching the adaptations!
There is a tips sheet for teachers, examples of student work, and two recording sheets (differentiated) for students on which they can note the adaptations that their given plant makes in order to survive in its ecosystem.
