No-prep lesson! PPT, practice worksheet, and exit ticket!
Students start off by analyzing pictures of a plant cell and animal cell, writing down 5 differences that they notice in their interactive notebook. (I taped a picture of a plant cell and animal cell onto their lab tables to reference during this opening activity). The PowerPoint then begins relating organelles to organs. Just like organs play a critical role in sustaining the life of an organism, organelles play a critical role in sustaining the life of a cell. Students learn the main similarities and differences between plant and animal cells. Similarities include the presence of a cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus. Differences include the shapes of the two types of cells, the presence of a cell wall and chloroplast in plant cells, a larger vacuole in plant cells, and larger mitochondrion in animal cells. Students end with a check for understanding. Five pictures are displayed and they have to hold up the correct notecard that matches the type of cell shown.
