Product Description
This investigation uses the scientific method to answer the question:

Does the amount of rooting hormone affect the length of the roots when cloning?

This investigation meets the 3rd-5th grade *Next Generation Science Standards: Science and Engineering practices and 4th grade Structure, Function, and Information Processing. While investigating cloning in plants students will learn the parts of an investigation, including the independent and dependent variable. They will compose a hypothesis, calculate the mean, graph their data, and write a conclusion. By the end of the investigation students should be able to explain that plant cells can become the type of cells needed and plants contain hormones that signal which kind of cells to make.
Teachers will love its’ ease of use, simple supplies, and thinking skills. Students will enjoy the hands on activity related to the real world.

Supplies Needed
House plant cuttings, water, rooting hormone (easy to find), 16 oz. plastic bottles, warm sunny location, permanent marker, and ruler.

This investigation is part of a series. The investigation is also available for K/1 and 2/3. The K-1st grade journal focuses on with or without rooting hormone. The 2nd-3rd grade journal focuses on the amount of rooting hormone and students do 3 tests. The 4th-5th grade journal focus on the same concept as the 2nd-3rd grade journal, but students will do 3 trials of each and calculate the average. The grade level adjustments make it a great way for a homeschool class to teach the same concept to multiple ages. It also is great for science fairs. All journals are found at:
