Plant Kingdom Classification Project

Research, Student Presentations, Dichotomous Key, Create a NEW species!

Use near end of plant classification unit!

Plant Kingdom Classification Project is ideal as an anchoring summative unit that allows your students to apply their previous knowledge of the 3 domain, 6 kingdom classification, the DKPCOFGS, and characteristics of the Plant Kingdom. It provides an opportunity for students to conduct research on 2 species within the Plant Kingdom, synthesize these notes into a compare / contrast VENN diagram with associated questions; then small teams present their findings to their classmates.

Creating a dichotomous key based on the 15 plant species pictured OR if student readiness at a stage where using a Dichotomous Key is more appropriate, they may use the same 15 plant species and a Dichotomous Key to identify each one.

Time required to conduct this section of classification is approximately 3-hour long class periods, depending on class size and student mastery of classification.

Previous knowledge required:

Characteristics of each of the 3 domains and 6 kingdoms;

Basic understanding of how to use and create a dichotomous key (basic use of dichotomous keys, and the rules for using and creating a dichotomous key).

Materials Included:

  • PowerPoint (20 pages) is a review of how the Plant Kingdom is classified.
  • Plant Kingdom Classification Diagram (1 page)
  • Bell work x 3 Compare and Contrast format (2 pages, 3 classes)
  • Exit Pass Plantae sentence stems DOK 1 to 4 Webb (2 pages)

  • Plantae 15 color images with common names, ss key with binomial names, teacher key with DKPCOFGS (6 pages)
  • Team cards: 12 pairs of species from the set of 15, for students to research as small teams (color pics); Answer Key for each pair included for CC Venn Diagram results (3 pages)
  • Student Research Notes (with 1 example teacher key) for students to collect data as they research their 2 species; Teacher Key (2 pages)
  • Rubric for self-evaluation small group participation (1/2 sheet) 1 per student.

  • Plant Kingdom VENN diagram with project rubric on back: this is where students synthesize their research notes into a compare/contrast organizer (2 pages)
  • Student small group presentations to class.

Dichotomous Key

  • Students create a dichotomous key using the 15 plant species (used as an enrichment; assessment or anchoring project); OR students may use the dichotomous key for the 15 Plant species pictured (5 pages)
  • Exit pass to create a new plant species and draw it (3 pages)

I hope you enjoy this lesson as much as my students and I have!
