Plant Kingdom Classification Project
Research, Student Presentations, Dichotomous Key, Create a NEW species!
Use near end of plant classification unit!
Plant Kingdom Classification Project is ideal as an anchoring summative unit that allows your students to apply their previous knowledge of the 3 domain, 6 kingdom classification, the DKPCOFGS, and characteristics of the Plant Kingdom. It provides an opportunity for students to conduct research on 2 species within the Plant Kingdom, synthesize these notes into a compare / contrast VENN diagram with associated questions; then small teams present their findings to their classmates.
Creating a dichotomous key based on the 15 plant species pictured OR if student readiness at a stage where using a Dichotomous Key is more appropriate, they may use the same 15 plant species and a Dichotomous Key to identify each one.
Time required to conduct this section of classification is approximately 3-hour long class periods, depending on class size and student mastery of classification.
Previous knowledge required:
Characteristics of each of the 3 domains and 6 kingdoms;
Basic understanding of how to use and create a dichotomous key (basic use of dichotomous keys, and the rules for using and creating a dichotomous key).
I hope you enjoy this lesson as much as my students and I have!
