Plant Inquiry Project
Notes for the Teacher
Objective: For students to teach young(er) people about the relationship between plants and animals within a region.
To complete this project, I had my 5th grade class integrate their science knowledge with writing, where they were tasked with writing a book for their Kindergarten Reading Buddy.
We reviewed different regions (e.g., coast, valley, mountain, etc.) and brainstormed about different animal, plants, and decomposers in each of these regions. Students did some research in class using their science books in small groups and shared out. From there, we discussed the requirements of the actual writing assignment. We also discussed how writers make decisions about logic (e.g., Will it make sense to teach a kindergartener about a fish that is living on the top of a mountain?), even when they are teaching within a story.
The stories that were more successful went into a fantasy/fairy tale format, and the least effective were informational books. However, the reflection and learning associated with their choices and determining which genre was more effective for their target audience was extremely valuable, and my students learned from their choices.
