This is a 470 slide PowerPoint presentation with built-in class notes (red slides). Built-in hands-on activities with instructions and visuals, video links, review games, and much more.
This PowerPoint begins describing the positives and negatives of wind to an ecosystem with references to erosion and also pollination of plants. How plants use wind is addressed and students learn the difference between male and female pine cones. How plants can disperse seeds is addressed with a series of slides and images. Why it is important that plants disperse seeds far from the parent plant is described. Wind dispersal is defined. A series of slides relate types of seeds dispersed by wind and relates them to the modern examples plane designs. A neat activity has the students build a seed from light materials to put in front of a fan. Distance the seeds travels from fan is recorded. Water dispersal is addressed and reference to the coconut addressed. Island Biogeography is described and a series of graphs presented that have the students answer some questions about distance from mainland, island size, migrations, extinctions, and species diversity. Island hopping is addressed and how species can make the journey to far away islands explained. A really neat activity then has the teacher turn their classroom into the Pacific Ocean and send coconuts (small marbles or golf balls) randomly down a ramp and across the floor (rug may be tougher) until it hits a series of Islands (cups). Directions and visuals make this activity a snap and it really helps students grasp that small islands far away from the mainland have fewer migrations. Animal dispersal is then addressed in a series of slides and students see many hooks and barb examples. A neat video link is provided. Students then take a visual quiz about the seed dispersal mechanisms. The answers are provided after the quiz. Fire Ecology is then addressed. A series of hidden box games conclude this really neat PowerPoint that have the students guess a relevant pictures as shapes are removed. Please see my entire Abiotic Factors Unit described below. -Thanks
