Explore plant growth, life cycles, and the needs of living things in this exciting, inquiry-based, hands-on unit. First, Students will learn foundational information and vocabulary about plants through two teacher-led activities. Next, students will participate in one-day plant experiments and long-term plant growth projects to learn other information firsthand.
A portion of this unit asks students to make scientific observations as they grow their own plant in the classroom. This can be done very economically by growing beans, peas, or radishes in a clear plastic cup (“Solo-cup” size), in simple potting soil. This can also be omitted if you decide against it.
The three experiments come with guiding inquiry questions (This is teacher-led inquiry, as the question is being given out ahead of time. You could also work together to have the students come up with their own questions.) Use the hands-on experiments to have the students devise their own answers to the questions.
** All activities available in metric units, and with Canadian spelling in the back of the book **
