This 2 day lesson rotates students through 5 stations related to plate tectonics. Students model the formation of hot spots, create a model volcano, investigate and model convection currents within Earth's mantle, and plot earthquakes and volcanoes on a map. My students love this lab and are able to make connections between what they are discovering in the lab to plate tectonics.
Materials needed are:
Station 1: water, hot plate, food coloring, handful of wood chips, beaker
Station 2: blue and red markers for each student
Station 3: red marker and a roll of paper towel
Station 4: graduated cylinder (use clay to wrap around and make it look like a volcano!), vinegar, baking soda, spoon, food coloring, paper towel
Station 5: Silly Putty
This lesson could be modified for many age ranges! Don't forget tp rate my product to earn TPT credits!!
